Dialectical Behavior Therapy Can Help

DBT for Emotion Regulation and Personal Growth

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is an evidence-based treatment that equips people with valuable skills to cope with and manage difficult emotions or situations. Originally developed for people who have difficulty handling intense emotions, this therapy focuses on striking a healthy balance between accepting oneself and acknowledging a need for change.

If you’re struggling with overwhelming emotions, difficulties in managing relationships, or feeling like you’re on a constant emotional roller coaster, DBT can help you find stability and balance. It is an effective therapy for adults, youth, families, and couples in three key areas:

  1. Coming to terms with difficult emotions through understanding and acceptance.
  2. Developing healthy coping skills that improve emotional regulation and reactivity.
  3. Empowering people to make positive life changes and improve interpersonal relationships.

The Effectiveness of Dialectical Behavior Therapy

DBT has been proven to be transformative in the lives of people from all walks of life. DBT uses a combination of individual and group therapy modalities to help people achieve greater control over their distressing emotions, and ultimately, their lives.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy stands as an effective treatment option for individuals facing suicidal ideation and thoughts, nonsuicidal self-injury, or suicide attempts. In these crisis situations, DBT can help individuals to better cope with distressing emotions, thus preventing them from escalating and mitigating the need for ER or hospital visits.

Additionally, this type of psychotherapy is proven effective for a wide range of other mental health disorders and emotional challenges including:

    • Borderline Personality Disorder
    • Substance Use Disorders
    • Eating Disorders
    • Depression
    • Anxiety Disorders
    • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
    • Anger Management Issues
    • Interpersonal Relationship Difficulties

Scientific evidence and compelling anecdotes speak volumes to the positive impact DBT can have on your daily life. For decades, this treatment has empowered individuals to navigate their emotions and discover a path toward healing and resilience.

What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)?

DBT is a specialized form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that was developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan in the 1970s. She faced her own mental health struggles as a teen and was passionate about helping patients who struggled with suicidal thoughts or behaviors to “get out of hell.”

Dr. Linehan developed DBT to better treat patients who had Borderline Personality Disorder, as well as those who found coping with strong emotions difficult. She developed Dialectical Behavior Therapy after discovering that CBT alone was not helping her patients recover from their mental health conditions.

DBT blends together change-based techniques (emphasizing changing one’s behavior) and acceptance-based approaches (emphasizing mindfulness and validation) to help people create “lives worth living.” Today, many psychologists use this therapy as a front-line approach to treating individuals with Bulimia, BPD, Substance Use Disorders, and a wide range of other mental health concerns.

    What Do You Treat?

While it’s important to understand the way we all experience and respond to emotion varies from person to person, many Behavioral Psych Studio clients benefit from our Comprehensive DBT treatment program. It is designed to help those experiencing difficulty with their emotions, thoughts, behaviors and relationships.

Some of our clients feel their emotions are out of control, which leads them to impulsive or destructive behaviors. Others feel numb because they’ve learned — over time — to suppress their emotions, or they struggle to identify how they’re feeling about another person, situation, or experience.

In our DBT Treatment program, we teach our clients how to experience and manage their emotions in healthier, more effective ways. This is accomplished by a combination of individual and group therapy and between session phone coaching to help our clients weave the skills they learn into their lives in meaningful ways.
